Donations to IUBMB may be made at any time by contacting the President or President Elect. Donations may be made for general purposes or for specific purposes such as symposium support, or young scientist support.
In May 1998 the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) donated $20,000 to IUBMB in support of the Wood-Whelan Fellowships. The IUBMB is very grateful to ASBMB for their continuing generosity towards and support of this program.
In 1997/8 Professor Kunio Yagi, IUBMB President from 1994-1997, donated $100,000 to establish the IUBMB Foundation. This donation is in addition to money supplied by Professor Yagi to support the Kunio Yagi plenary lecture at IUBMB Congresses. Professor Yagi, who died in 2003, was the Chief Manager, Institute of Applied Biochemistry, Mitake, Gifu, Japan.
In 2000 an anonymous donation of $100,000 was made to establish the Lars Ernster Travel Fund. The fund is named after Professor Ernster, a distinguished physiological chemist from Stockholm University who held may important offices in and outside Sweden. This donation will be used to support the attendance of young scientists at IUBMB Congresses.
In 2001 Professor William J. Whelan, IUBMB President from 1997-2000 donated $18,000 to IUBMB. This donation will be used to support the Wood-Whelan Fellowships named in part after Professor Whelan. Bill Whelan is Editor in Chief of IUBMB Life, and Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Miami School of Medicine.
In 2005 an anonymous donation of $14,326 was made to IUBMB. This donation was added to the Wood-Whelan Research Fellowship Fund.
In 2005 Professor Brian Clark, President of IUBMB from 2000-2003, donated $25,000 to IUBMB. The Executive Committee decided to use this donation to support the planned Advanced School in Africa.
